Fitness Nutrition Secrets - Food Label Trickery You pick up a box or package of a healthy looking fitness food, give a quick read of the front of the label and add it to your shopping cart. What you read made sense and the nutrients per serving looked great. But, you go to prepare your new find for a meal or snack, and a closer look at the label reveals it's not what you thought. You thought the box said '17 grams' of protein - but you now see that the food only has 9 grams of protein per serving (which isn't so bad either). You take a close look at what you read at the store to see where 'you got confused' - and realize that the nutrient content quoted for marketing purposes is different than the nutrient profile outlined on the 'Nutrition Facts' label. The nutrient marketing material on the front of the box is based on a 400 calorie serving - but the 'Facts' label outlines the content for a 200 calorie serving. Big Difference! It's up to you to 'read the fine print' when shopping for your 'fitness foods'. The marketing departments of the food companies know how we shop. They know our hot buttons. They know most of us are in a hurry. And they know to take advantage of labeling guidelines to get people to make faster 'buy' decisions. The point of this tip is to get you to pay closer attention to nutrition labels AND their translations as they apply to your fitness goals and long term success. Just a few extra minutes will go a long way toward keeping you in tune with 'how much' of 'what' you are putting in your body. Read the obvious but pay closer attention to the 'not so obvious'.
